List of Natural Burial Grounds

Resting Woods, Wainfleet St Mary, Lincolnshire

We opened in summer 2025, offering a peaceful setting as a nature positive place of rest. The burial ground is situated on Church Lane, which is a quiet rural road giving access to fields, woodland and the nearby medieval church of St Marys. Though most are services will be non-secular, the local vicar is happy to hold services in the nextdoor church if that is your preference. The burial ground has its own access and carpark, it has been created on part of our family farm, we have currently created approximately 1 acre of flower meadow and have planning consent and land to expand in future.

Our aim is to create a nature positive resting place. The land has been established as a new flower meadow with over 30 types of native flowers and grasses growing. In our first summer we were delighted to see dozens of species of bee, butterfly, dragonfly and other insects. The burials and ashes each receive a 3m x 3m individual plot, this is very generous spacing for graves, our size selection being made to support healthy tree growth. Each burial will be marked with a native tree, we have selected about 15 trees which will perform well on our soils, and you can choose the tree to mark the grave.

We have a timber building on site to allow for sheltered services and a space for reflection. There are a number of benches for sitting and talking to those you are visiting. We offer bench mounted plaques so you can include your words of remembrance.

The overarching aim of our site is to create life as nature. We aim to create a living legacy where those who have been buried with us become part of that nature, whether it be trees, flowers, bees, bugs or birds. Our woodland tree selection is mixed species and chosen for their nature value, the wildflowers are diverse and mixed to give wide insect benefits and we hope to establish native bulbs such as daffodils and bluebells within the woodland as it grows. This creates a living space for those who visit and chance for reflection among the sights and sounds of nature and the seasons.

If this is an approach to nature and to remembrance which you feel would be a suitable legacy or bring comfort from natural reflection, then please do get in touch.
