Hackpen Natural Burial Ground, Devon

Regional winner in
The People's Awards for the Best Natural Burial Ground 2024

We offer affordable natural burials in a meadow on the southwest side of Hackpen Hill, surrounded by mature trees. It’s a beautiful, peaceful and wild location, with abundant wildlife including a small herd of roe deer. On the edge of the Blackdown Hills, there are far-reaching views across the Culm Valley.

The burial ground has no gravestones or mementos on the graves themselves, and no buildings or tarmac. All materials used in our burials are biodegradable and the meadow flowers every year before being cut for hay. The simplicity of this setting provides a resting place for those who feel at home in nature.

Burial ceremonies can include any religious tradition or none at all, and be designed by families to honour those who have died. They can take all the time and space they need on the day. Parking for up to 20 cars is available on site, together with temporary shelter and seating.

Families, friends and local residents can use the burial ground for contemplation, a walk or a picnic and we provide simple seating around the meadow. We are always open during daylight hours and dogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead.

We like to meet you and talk through any questions and thoughts you may have before or after a bereavement, to ensure we provide exactly what you need.

Memorials: Families can plant a memorial tree in the young woodland below the burial meadow, and add a natural slate plaque for remembrance. Planting wild flowers on graves and around the trees is welcome. We use native trees likely to thrive in the local conditions, creating a new community woodland together.
