Westmill Woodland Burial Ground CIC, Watchfield, Oxfordshire

Regional Runner Up in South West England

in

The People's Awards for the Best Natural Burial Ground in the UK 2013 and 2021

Westmill Woodland Burial Ground is a simple 3 acre site in the midst of our organic farm on the Oxfordshire/Wiltshire border. It has magnificent views up to the Downs and the ancient Uffington White Horse and is surrounded by rolling farmland. It is being planted with mixed English trees with glades, pathways and some open meadow areas around the site. There is a small Roundhouse suitable for ceremonies or for sitting and listening to the larks or having a picnic.

We are a CIC which means we run as a not for profit organisation serving our community by supporting the bereaved and giving people clear information about death and dying.  We have a lot of resources in the office that people can borrow or have to help them plan and make decisions.

We hold free events throughout the year.  Open Days, Memorial Days, Tree planting days, plant identification etc.  Our Friends and Family group help organise some of these and act as a forum for new ideas.  We send out bi-annual newsletters to keep people in touch with what is happening.

There are no individual memorials on plots but a shared memorial stone has been placed in our grass circle and spiralling around it are small individual Welsh slate memorial tablets flat to the ground.  We are proud to see already a huge increase in biodiversity on the site and have been surveying the plants and birds to keep track of the changes.

Liz Rothschild who set up the burial ground with her partner is also a celebrant but there is no expectation that you have to use her services when coming to Westmill and we have information about a range of other celebrants as well as often having vicars and other religious leaders conducting funerals here.  There is no time limit on how long your funeral can be.

Our office is not manned every day but we respond in between times to enquiries and the burial ground is always open if you wish to visit.  We only ask you are respectful if you arrive when a funeral is happening.
