Sharpham Meadow Natural Burial Ground, Devon
Sharpham Meadow Natural Burial Ground was opened on midsummer's day, 2013. It has stunning panoramic views taking in Dartmoor, the curve of the tidal stretch of the river Dart and with glimpses of the sea. The land is part of the Sharpham Trust, an educational charity with particular emphasis on reconnecting people with the land. The ground has been farmed bio dynamically and organically for the past twenty years, and is owned by Sharpham Trust. The future security of the burial ground is tied into a wider land management plan, and will never be used for anything but grazing sheep.

There is a ceremonial shelter being built as we write, and a major feature of the burial ground is the central fire pit, the lighting of which played a significant role in it's official opening.

A grave costs £980, with an "at time of need" burial fee of £400. The ground is open to everyone whether local or not. A small uniform, ground flat marker stone is allowed as an individual grave marker, hand carved by a local artist. Trees are not permitted on each grave, as this would quickly obscure the view, although there are opportunities to plant memorial trees elsewhere, and to have names inscribed in the rafters of the ceremonial building. There are many plans for memorial art around the ground.

The site is managed by Claire and Rupert Callender, who also offer a full undertaking and celebrant service, but is open to all funeral directors and all families, whether using a funeral director or not.  Claire and Rupert are Good Funeral Guide award winning undertakers who have run The Green Funeral Company for the past fourteen years.
