Priory Woods Natural Burial Ground, Hull

The Priory Road cemetery was officially opened on the 17th May 2010, the cemetery is eight hectares in size, and includes a natural burial facility. The cemetery offers families the option of commemorating their loved ones in different ways.

The cemetery has been developed to be self-sustainable for its water and power supply. The cemetery was created to be as environmentally friendly and encourage as much biodiversity as possible. The large reservoirs at the rear of the cemetery are a beautiful natural water and reed area rich in wildlife.

The natural Burial section of the Cemetery is a natural meadow grassland. Wild indigenous flowers grow in abundance. To help nature develop in this area the grass is only cut twice a year so between cuts the grass can look long and not manicured. This is what natural areas should look like and is purposely designed for this use and blends nicely within the heart of the cemetery. Burials in this area are simple. We encourage simple coffins to be used for interments, no man-made materials used if possible and no memorabilia or headstones to be placed on the grave. The graves are for one person and/or for a number of cremated  remains in biodegradable boxes. The burial location can be marked if wanted by the planting of an indigenous fruit tree on the grave, the planting of bulbs on the grave is also acceptable and the laying of fresh flowers with no cellophane ok. We aim to maintain a natural setting within this area where by the circle of life continues with the least impact on the surroundings and on nature.

We welcome people of all cultures and communities. Staff on site are highly trained and will assist with all aspects of preparation and provision of information.

The site will be under major development works through the Autumn and Winter period of 2021 –unto the summer of 2022 and access may be limited through this period.
